The Westwood Park district of San Francisco is bordered by Ingleside to the south, Mount Davidson Manor to the west, Sunnyside to the east, and Westwood Highlands and Monterey Heights to the north. The Westwood Park neighborhood of San Francisco was developed between 1917 and 1927. Westwood Park was one of five San Francisco neighborhoods that were carved out of a 725 acre parcel of land that used to be part of Adolph Sutro’s 1,000 acre estate. While the area was originally called the “outer lands”, and was considered remote and inaccessible, rail service through Twin Peaks, and several important roads (19th Avenue, Sloat, Ocean, Portola) built between 1918 and 1927, opened the area up. The neighborhood was laid out by John Punnett, engineer. The main entrance is off Ocean Avenue, at Miramar Drive. The earlier success of Ingleside Terrace may have influenced the plan of streets tracing concentric loops around a green in this subdivision of single family detached houses, which are uniformly set back from the streets at a good distance. Drive Miramar Avenue for a good representative sample of the houses in Westwood Park. Westwood Park is mostly a “bedroom community” San Francisco neighborhood. The homes are modest, but neat and nicely kept — you won’t see mansions or massive lots here, but the houses aren’t “glued together”, either, and they are generally attractive. One can park on the street overnight in Westwood Park and still find one’s car intact in the morning — which is unfortunately more than one can say about many other neighborhoods of our fine city.
