Walnut Creek, affectionately called “The Creek” by locals, is the heart of Contra Costa — geographically, culturally, and otherwise. Centrally located near Mt. Diablo, and with a population of about 75,000 people, Walnut Creek has recently taken on the reputation of being a “hip” and “trendy” address, with a very popular downtown with plenty of shopping, restaurants (about 100), and cafes, as well as small businesses. Indeed, Walnut Creek even got its own Tiffanys in recent years! There is even a Regional Center for the Arts (operas, plays, musicals, concerts, art exhibits) in the downtown area. Walnut Creek incorporated in 1914, but was nothing much more than a train station and Walnut groves until well after World War II — the population in 1950 was only 2,500 people! Then came the freeways, and the population was over 40,000 people by the early 1970’s. Walnut Creek is also home to Rossmoor, which is one of the oldest and largest retirement communities in Northern California, housing about 9,000 retired folks, of average age 77. No children allowed — and you must be over age 55 to live in Rossmoor. (Be careful when driving around — watch out for that shiny brown 1976 Cadillac that seemingly has no one at the wheel!). Walnut Creek also excels in parks and recreation, with the massive Heather Farms Park (with pool) being the site of the annual Walnut Festival, and there are endless miles of trails for walking, hiking, or biking, as well as thousands of acres of open space and wildlife preserves. What else? Two BART stations (needed — the drive to SF is horrendous, due to the Caldecott Tunnel AND the Bay Bridge, a “double whammy” of two of the biggest traffic nightmares ever built by mankind), low crime rates, excellent schools (90th percentile all the time, statewide), two large hospitals (John Muir and Kaiser), many jobs in town, two golf courses, and the beautiful Mt. Diablo, a state park. Because of the strong tax base, Walnut Creek has the money to spend on keeping things beautiful. The downside? You will pay for all of this! Home prices are expensive — Walnut Creek is a trendy address to have. The city was nicknamed “Walnut City of Creek” by some long term locals, because the city’s former logo used to say exactly that and read just that way! They have since moved the “city of” up to the TOP of the logo, so it makes a lot more sense and is easier to read! (Took them long enough!) The schools in Walnut Creek rank in the 90th percentiles statewide, with Las Lomas High in the Acalanes district (with Lafayette, Orinda, and Moraga schools ) winning state honors regularly. In 2010, the California State Census counted 32,025 residential housing untis in Walnut Creek , of which 12,204 were single family detached houses, 4,817 were single family attached homes, 14,956 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 48 were mobile homes. There were 10,000 in 1960, and then 55,000 in 1980! It now sits at around 75,000 people. Walnut Creek is served scholastically by the Walnut Creek (elementary), Mt. Diablo Unified, and Acalanes High School District. In particular, the Acalanes High School district (Las Lomas High School) has been honored by the state of California for perpetually ranking in the top 10% of California schools.
