The St. Francis Wood district of San Francisco is bordered by West Portal to the northwest, and by Balboa Terrace, Monterey Heights, and Sherwood Forest to the southeast. Easily one of San Francisco’s most beautiful neighborhoods, it is also, of course, one of its most expensive. With its wide streets, its fountains, its mature trees, and its gorgeous custom built mansions on large lots, the St. Francis Wood district is certainly one of the prettiest gems in San Francisco’s many-jeweled crown. St. Francis Wood was developed along with a few of its neighbors, Forest Hill, Balboa Terrace, Monterey Heights, and Westwood Park, upon a section of a 725 acre parcel of land that was purchased in 1911 by the A.S. Baldwin Residential Development Company from part of Adolph Sutro’s 1,000 acre estate. Originally considered part of the “outer lands”, this area was considered “remote” for many years, and development and building began slowly at first. However, as the Twin Peaks Tunnel was built, and Ocean Avenue, 19th Avenue, Sloat Blvd., and Portola Drive were built, these areas became instantly more accessible to downtown and to all points of the city, and development eventually took off. St. Francis Wood is easily one of the most prestigious residential tracts west of Twin Peaks, featuring 50 x 100 foot lots (twice the normal size), underground utilities, a boulevard with a landscaped median strip, and tree lined streets separated from the sidewalks. Many of the mature trees in St. Francis Wood came from the 1915 Panama Pacific Exhibition’s (for which the Palace of Fine Arts was built, and the Marina district was landfilled) closing sale. Perhaps the one feature that most distinguishes St. Francis Wood from almost every other San Francisco neighborhood is the lushness and continuity of the landscape, which is integrated with the overall plan and look and feel of the neighborhood in such a way as to maintain homogeneity of architectural style, scale, and even color, to a large extent. A strong neighborhood association controlled architectural design and kept things looking like they “fit in”, even though there were many, many different architects designing the houses. In other words, St. Francis Wood is as close to a suburban subdivision as one will find in San Francisco, with everything flowing smoothly and looking like it belongs, yet the houses do not have that “cookie-cutter” look to them by any means — they still maintain their individuality and uniqueness, while the overall feel of the neighborhood is simply charming and the look is simply gorgeous. St. Francis Wood is, simply put, an architectural delight to the senses, and the homes are generally well worth their very high prices, in exchange for such a uniquely spectacular neighborhood setting and location.
