The SOMA (South of Market) District of San Francisco is bordered by Van Ness /Civic Center, the Tenderloin, and Downtown to the north, South Beach to the east, the Inner Mission to the west, and Mission Bay and Potrero Hill to the south. The SOMA district was almost entirely destroyed by the earthquake and subsequent fires of 1906. One very notable exception was the old U.S. Mint building, which still stands today. Built in 1874, the Mint stored one third of the nation’s gold reserves until it was transferred to Fort Knox in 1937. The Mint Building was fortified with three foot thick granite walls and steel shutters, which enabled it to survive the quake and the fires afterwards. After the quake and fire, the Mint honored certificates from San Francisco’s destroyed banks, which allowed the people access to cash. Prior to the earthquake, the SOMA district was a working class neighborhood, with gambling and prostitution among the entertainment offerings of the region — many back streets and alleys were even named after madams of local renown — especially along Mission and Howard streets. Night life is still abundant in the SOMA district — however, think bars, restaurants, and clubs these days, as opposed to the gambling houses, saloons, and brothels of the pre-quake period. What the SOuth of MArket district of San Francisco also offers is a tremendous variety of housing and an amazing array of new construction, which also means plenty of jobs. The entire SOMA neighborhood is undergoing rapid and intense construction of everything from residential condos to office buildings to research laboratories to commercial buildings (even a new Safeway recently went in). The South of Market district of San Francisco is indeed a place where one can live, work, and play all within walking distance — no car required. Which is a very good thing — because like in many of the city’s densely populated neighborhoods, parking is hard to find, and/or very expensive. The primary housing style and type in the SOMA district is one of apartments, condos, flats, TIC’s, and live/work lofts, as opposed to single family detached houses. There simply isn’t the space for single family detached homes. Those seeking a single family detached house may wish to look at the nearby Potrero Hill, Inner Mission, Hayes Valley, or Western Addition neighborhoods.
