Saratoga lies about 45 miles south of San Francisco, on the lower peninsula, in Santa Clara County. The population is about 33,000, most of whom work in Silicon Valley. Though they might work in neighboring Silicon Valley cities, the residents of Saratoga come home to a relaxing environment, so they can get away from the stress of the work day. There is a historic downtown area, Saratoga Village, also known simply as “the Village”, with plenty of restaurants and shops. The Mountain Winery features world class concerts. Hakone Gardens is the oldest Japanese style garden in the U.S. Saratoga’s name supposedly comes from Saratoga, New York — another relatively wealthy community that once had mineral springs and a lumber industry. Although located on the edge of Silicon Valley and home to many of its movers and shakers, Saratoga is not a home to industry. This is a quiet, peaceful residential town, which focuses on leisure, arts, recreation, and the finer things in life. Saratoga has only a few small business sections, mostly little shops and restaurants, and actually suffers from a very weak tax base as a result. The town does not want industry — it wants art, beauty, recreation, and quality of life. Think old town, small town charm. The commute to Silicon Valley cities that DO have major employers is not too bad. The school rankings are consistently high in Saratoga, and the crime rate is very low. Among the early residents of Saratoga was James Phelan, a US Senator who built a palatial home there. He was a major patron of the arts and helped set the overall tone of the town as a place to relax and enjoy life. West Valley Community College lies in the middle of town, and offers classes, activities, and facilities to all local residents, cheaply priced. A library, theater, gym, track, and playing fields may be found there, and one can also take classes in arts, literature, and computers, among other subjects. The California State Census in 2010 counted 10,781 reisdential housing units in Saratoga, of which 9,640 were single family detached houses, 560 were single family attached homes, 664 were condos, apartments, or townhouses, and 7 were mobile homes. Saratoga is served by six school districts, and overall the Saratoga schools rank among the tops in the state, with Saratoga High landing in the top 5 schools statewide on the math portion of the SAT almost every year.
