San Pablo is a west Contra Costa County town with a population of about 32,000 people. When the neighboring city of Richmond began annexing bordering land after World War II, the village of San Pablo incorporated to protect itself. However, since San Pablo is surrounded by Richmond, it is destined to remain small in area. San Pablo boomed after the war because it built plenty of housing for the returning veterans. The downtown card room in San Pablo raises a lot of revenue for the city. Native American tribes have recently made a deal with the state to build a major Las Vegas-style casino on the site — the details must still be worked out, but if built, the casino will undoubtedly bring in many jobs and change the character of the city. However, many residents are worried that it would also bring increased crime and traffic. (The traffic, at least, is a guarantee!) Speaking of traffic — located along the dreaded and nightmarish I-80 corridor, San Pablo certainly sees its share of it. However, being not too far from the bridge, the commute is much less worse than from many other east bay cities. It’s a function of time, more than distance. In 2010, the California state census counted 9,390 residential housing units in San Pablo — of these, 4,133 were single family detached houses, 773 were single family attached homes, 3,678 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 806 were mobile homes. San Pablo is served by the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Also in town is a community college, Contra Costa College. San Pablo is the home of Doctors Medical Center, which has the only true burn center in the east bay and thus plays a very important role for the care and treatment of many bay area burn victims. San Pablo incorporated after World War II, in order to escape the grasp of nearby city Richmond, which was trying to annex neighboring cities. Just as Piedmont did this to escape Oakland’s grasp, and Newark did it to escape Fremont’s grasp, for many a small town, if they do not incorporate themselves, they can often lose their identity, or at least give away control over their own destiny to a larger, more powerful neighboring city. San Pablo boomed right after WWII, because it built homes for veterans returning from the war. There are also some newer homes, though — and the prices vary accordingly. There are a lot of younger families in San Pablo. A highlight is the casino, located downtown, which does generate a lot of money for the city.
