Ross is a small, quiet, hilly, heavily wooded Marin county city with a population of about 3,000 people. Ross straddles Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, next to San Anselmo and San Rafael, and ascends into the hills. The streets are narrow, and walls and gates (as well as trees and shrubbery) protect the privacy of the residents. Ross got its name from its (former) railroad station. The widow of a land baron deeded over the land to the railroad on the condition that the station be named after her departed husband. Ross has some very large homes, both old and new (mostly old, though). The locals sometimes get angry at outsiders who park along the streets to get to nearby parks. Sir Francis Drake Blvd., the “main drag”, can get congested during rush hour, but Ross is not too far from the freeway or the ferry terminals at Larkspur Landing, so the commute is not bad. The California state census tallied 814 residential housing units in Ross in 2010. Of these, 794 were single family detached houses, 12 were apartments, condos, or townhomes, and 8 were mobile homes. Kids in Ross attend Ross Elementary School, which was named one of the top 10 schools in the nation in 1991. Kids then move up to Redwood High, in the Tamalpais District, which scores in the 90th percentile of California public schools. Ross has no mail delivery, as it is perceived as being too intrusive. Residents pick up their mail at the post office.
