Palo Alto is a tremendously popular city located about 30 miles south of San Francisco and 15 miles north of San Jose. Neighboring cities include Los Altos, Mountain View, Menlo Park, and East Palo Alto. Palo Alto has a population of about 60,000 people. Palo Alto is sandwiched between Hwy 280 and Hwy 101, and CalTrain runs through town, as well — in other words, commutes are decent in all directions. There are also employers in town — plenty of them. Look for high tech firms on Page Mill Road, and venture capital firms on Sand Hill Road. For shopping and dining, try the downtown streets of California Avenue and University Avenue. Palo Alto is the birthplace of Silicon Valley, where Mr. Hewlett and Mr. Packard first began their electronic tinkering in a small detached garage. Palo Alto has 1 acre of park land for every 4 acres of total land, which is well above the average, even for the conservationist-minded peninsula. Palo Alto serves as the cultural center of the Silicon Valley, infusing it with culture, prestige, and sophistication. Look for book stores, coffee shops, art galleries, independent and foreign film theatres, etc. The town’s two high schools rank consistently among the tops in the state, and the parents are not just interested in the schools, they are obsessive about them. Palo Alto is filled with both academics and lots of high tech folks as well — both of whom agree that a good education is very, very important and should always be a priority. The Palo Alto Unified School District which also takes in part of Los Altos Hills, in 1995 passed the largest school renovation bond in the history of the state — $143 million. Now THAT is commitment! Gunn and Palo Alto High score in the tops in the state every year on the math SAT scores, and the graduation rates are very close to 100%. Being an old city, Palo Alto has one feature that comes only with the aging of a city — nice, mature trees, and hence tree-lined streets, providing shade and fresh air, not to mention more charm, as well. Via Caltrain, one can commute to jobs in San Francisco to the north or San Jose to the south — but Palo Alto has its own large share of excellent employers as well — you can bike to work at Hewlett Packard and many, many other Palo Alto employers as well. The California State Census counted 27,019 residential housing units in Palo Alto in 2010, of which 15,592 were single family detached houses, 976 were single family attached homes, 10,287 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 164 were mobile homes.
