The Pacific Heights District of San Francisco is bordered by Cow Hollow to the north, The Presidio and Presidio Heights to the west, Lower Pacific Heights to the south, and Nob Hill to the east — good neighbors make for good neighborhoods! Pacific Heights is certainly one of San Francisco’s most prestigious neighborhoods, with many beautiful mansions with stunning views, as a result of the very steep terrain. (Planning on visiting? Check the brakes on your car first – -and then try to move east-west, more than north-south — your car’s brakes will thank you!) Although there is a variety of housing type and style in the Pacific Heights neighborhood, the predominant housing style is single family detached houses — but the common theme is one of ALL of the housing being expensive in the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco! Pacific Heights is one of the city’s most varied residential neighborhoods, but also has a remarkable collection of churches and temples, as well as shops and restaurants (visit Union Street for a sampling). Fillmore Street is the main north-south shopping area, while Union Street is the main east-west one. Alta Plaza Park, located atop Pacific Heights between Jackson, Clay, Scott, and Steiner streets, has terraces sloping down to Clay Street. Some believe the terraces are a landing platform for spacecraft. While that is certainly subject to debate, it IS a fact that the park’s south stairway reproduces the grand stairway of the casino at Monte Carlo. Another Pacific Heights landmark that is also “out of this world” is the amazing Spreckels Mansion, which occupies a full city block between Washington, Jackson, Gough, and Octavia streets. The 55-room, 26 bathroom Spreckels mansion was completed in 1913 for sugar magnate Adolph Spreckels. The largest (at this writing) private home in San Francisco, there is also a building in the back of the mansion which houses a covered pool, which is thought to be the largest private indoor swimming pool in the country. Romance novel author Danielle Steel bought the mansion in 1990.
