The construction of Twin Peaks Tunnel, Portola Drive, Sloat Boulevard, 19th Avenue, and Ocean Avenue (all between 1918 and 1924) helped make the area, including Monterey Heights, accessible from all directions (and to downtown, of course), and from that point on it flourished as a popular residential neighorhood. Monterey Heights sits just above Monterey Blvd, and rises up into the hills. The steep altitude affords many of the houses in Monterey Heights outstanding views. Monterey Heights is made up almost exclusively of single family detached houses– the homes are larger, custom built houses, with good sized lots, and plenty of distance between the homes. There is ample street parking, and one will generally find one’s car intact in the morning if one were to park overnight in this neighborhood.
