Menlo Park lies about 35 miles south of San Francisco, and about 20 miles north of San Jose. Palo Alto borders to the south, and Redwood City and Atherton to the north. The population of Menlo Park is about 31,000 people. Located between Hwy 101 and Hwy 280, plus having a CalTrain station, Menlo Park offers a great commute to both San Francisco and San Jose. Menlo Park, and neighboring Palo Alto, also have many local jobs themselves. There is a nice downtown, and there are plenty of restaurants, shops, and cafes along the El Camino Real. The weather and the schools are excellent. Menlo Park is served by the Ravenswood, Las Lomitas, and Menlo Park elementary school districts, and then kids move up to Menlo-Atherton High, in the Sequoia District. Scores in the Las Lomitas and Menlo Park districts are among the highest in the state. Menlo Park has 12,750 residential housing units as of the 2010 census. 6,785 are single family detached houses. 930 are single family attached homes. 4,940 are apartments or condos or townhouses, and there are 5 mobile homes in town. Menlo Park was named after the hometown of some pioneer Irishmen. It traces its roots back to the railroads in the 1860’s, and has a historic center, near the train station and city hall. The city incorporated in 1927, after many Stanford faculty members chose to make it home. Like neighboring Palo Alto, Menlo Park has benefitted from nearby Stanford University and Silicon Valley as well. The downside — internal traffic. Due to a lack of city planning, traffic bunches up on the El Camino Real almost all the way through Menlo Park. Reach the chamber of commerce at 650-325-2818. Menlo Park is the southernmost city in San Mateo County, situated along the 101 corridor. It borders Palo Alto, and the home values generally reflect that fact. The school districts rank very highly, as well, which also serves to drive home prices up. Some neighborhoods feature charming, older, larger homes, as well. Offering a good commute to the north, the south, and even to the east bay via the nearby Dumbarton Bridge, Menlo Park has a very attractive location on the peninsula. The weather is also quite good. Though it borders on the Silicon Valley, Menlo Park retains a very “peninsula” feel, like neighboring Palo Alto. Downtown traffic can be quite nasty on the El Camino Real, however — this city was not a master planned city.
