The Laurel Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, also known as Jordan Park / Laurel Heights, Laurel Heights / Jordan Park, or Jordan Park, is bordered by Presidio Heights to the north, Inner Richmond to the west, Lone Mountain to the south, and Lower Pacific Heights to the east — good neighborhoods, all. The Laurel Heights district of San Francisco was developed for the most part during the years 1900-1920. Joseph Leonard and his Urban Realty Company, of Ingleside Terrace fame, was one of the developers, especially in the area between Arguello and Commonwealth, and California to Geary. The availability of cheaper land, along with railway services to make it accessible, was an enticement to builders around the turn of the century to buy up small parcels of land just outside of the downtown area and build modest homes. While they had previously built in the inner city neighborhoods, neighborhoods such as Laurel Heights enabled them to have room to “stretch out” a bit and get more creative and unique with their architectural styles. The Laurel Heights district of San Francisco is comprised of single family detached houses. The homes are large and custom built, with a wide variety of architectural styles, and situated on very large lots uniformly set back far from the street. Speaking of the streets — the streets are amazingly wide in this district — even after cars parking on both sides of the street, the remaining space is still amazingly wide.
