Larkspur is an old Marin County city, located along Highway 101, about 10 miles north of the Golden Gate bridge, sheltered by Mt. Tamalpais and abutting the bay. Larkspur has a population of about 12,000 people. Due to its location, Larkspur has one of the better commutes in Marin County. Larkspur and Corte Madera share a police department, and they call themselves the “Twin Cities”. Those would be fraternal twins, not identical twins, as each city does have its own distinct flavor. Larkspur annexed much of neighboring Greenbrae years ago, and, technically speaking, Greenbrae should be identified as a neighborhood of Larkspur. Yet, many people still consider the unincorporated area of Greenbrae to be a separate town as opposed to being a part of Larkspur. We tend to agree with the latter position. The name Larkspur was an accident — the town developer bought a large ranch and subdivided it into lots in the 1880’s, attracting a railroad station. His wife gave him the idea to name the town after a local flower that she thought was a Larkspur. It turned out to be a Lupine, not a Larkspur — there are neither wolves nor Larkspurs around here, but the name stuck, anyway… so, even though it’s a misnomer, Larkspur it is, and has been for 100 years now — Larkspur incorporated in 1908. Happy 110th birthday, Larkspur! Larkspur school rankings are high, and crime rates are low. The schools generally rank in the 90th percentile statewide. Students attend either Redwood High or San Rafael High (for those from Larkspur Landing). You can reach the Chamber of Commerce at (415) 663-9232. The 2010 California State Census counted 6,424 residential housing units in Larkspur, of which 2,449 were single family detached houses, 360 were single family attached homes, 3,376 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 239 were mobile homes (near the freeway). Very unusual for a small, upper income city, and also quite rare for Marin County, Larkspur has more apartments than single family detached homes.
