The Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco is bordered by Alamo Square to the north, Van Ness/Civic Center to the east, Mission Dolores and the Duboce Triangle to the south, and Haight Ashbury and Buena Vista Park to the west. So, who was Hayes, and why was it named Hayes Valley? No, it was not President Hayes, though that would be a very reasonable guess. It was the original landowner of this neighborhood — one-time San Francisco mayor Tom Hayes, who owned a 160 acre tract of land between Alamo and Duboce parks. His estate burned down in 1872. Hayes Valley has undergone several transformations over the years, rising and falling in popularity as the freeway has come and gone, generally. Whereas at one point the neighborhood was virtually abandoned, it has more recently been revitalized and is rediscovering its rich history. Whereas many of the old Victorians, Queen Annes, and Edwardians had been divided into apartments and many were even torn down, those which remain are now seeing a lot of restoration to their original appearance. Hayes Valley enjoys a location close to everything — very conveniently and centrally located to downtown, as well as freeway access. The Hayes Valley neighborhood blends residential and commercial space well, as there are plenty of restaurants, shops, cafes, and small businesses within an easy stroll — one need not have a car in Hayes Valley. That’s a good thing — because parking can be very tough to find and/or very expensive if found. Hayes Valley also has a very good mix in terms of housing styles, types, size, and price, too – you will find it all here, from expensive single family detached houses, to mid-range flats and lofts and TIC’s, to relatively inexpensive apartments — there really is no predominant housing style. The area is fairly densely populated, though — smaller housing units do tend to outnumber the single family detached homes in Hayes Valley. The Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco is roughly bordered by Fell and McAllister to the north, Gough to the east, Duboce to the south, and Divisadero to the west. The Hayes Valley district of San Francisco is officially designated as neighborhood 6b by the San Francisco Association of Realtors. It is part of District 6 (Central North), Subdistrict B. Centrally located, this is a charming old San Francisco neighborhood which escaped the great earthquake of 1906 (and subsequent fires) largely unscathed, despite being not too far from downtown — but it is located west of VanNess, which was the fire break in 1906 — hence, you will notice many old Victorians still standing here.
