Half Moon Bay is a lovely coastal city, located on the San Mateo County coast, along Highway 1, about 30 miles south of San Francisco and 10 miles west of San Mateo. It is most commonly accessed via Highway 92, however, from the San Mateo area. Half Moon Bay has a population of about 13,000 people. Half Moon Bay is actually one of the oldest communities in San Mateo County, having a rich history in farming. A favorite tourist destination and weekend retreat for sun worshipers fleeing from just a bit too much sun and the inner peninsula heat, especially on hot summer days, Half Moon Bay can tend to be a bit TOO touristy, and it is not uncommon to have traffic jams at any given time near the intersection of Hwy 92 and Hwy 1, and often the entire length of Highway 92, in fact. Inner peninsula folk have a strange and hypocritical love-hate relationship with Half Moon Bay. They claim that it is too cold and foggy and that they would never want to live there, and yet they tend to spend many a weekend and much of their leisure time visiting the place, and just can’t seem to get enough of it, because it IS so beautiful! Go figure. Half Moon Bay should consider charging a “per car entry fee”, as Highway 92 resembles a parking lot in and out of the town on many a hot summer weekend as all of the people who complain that it is cold and foggy endure hours of sitting in traffic just to come visit… The rural atmosphere, with farmland and ranches with horses and cattle, plus the beaches and the downtown shops and restaurants, seem to have an allure for just about everyone. October’s Art and Pumpkin Festival attracts over 250,000 visitors each year! World famous among surfers, “The Mavericks”, just north of Pillar Point, is a place where some of the tallest waves in the world break. A world class pro surfer was killed by a monster wave there in 1994, which just added to the local surf lore and has actually made the place even more hallowed and attractive to surfers. School rankings come in at about the 60th percentile for California public schools, which is better than average, but not stellar. The 2010 census counted 4,325 residential housing units in Half Moon Bay — 2,733 were single family detached houses, 536 were single family attached homes, 629 were multiple home units, and 427 were mobile homes. Located along the mid San Mateo County coastline, and known for its cool weather, hot surfing, and popular beaches, Half Moon Bay attracts many a tourist. Unfortunately, the downside to that is that traffic jams will occur frequently along the few access routes into town, most notably Hwy 92 from San Mateo… If you are looking for a place to live that will offer you a good commute, Half Moon Bay would probably not be one of your better choices (unless you are a fisherman or professional surfer!). For retirement or just peaceful, quiet family living, though, it’s a great place to settle down. The beach does, indeed, have a distinct sweeping crescent shape that resembles a half moon — hence the name.
