How could anyone Haight Ashbury?! We love it! Famous for its 1960’s hippies and flower children, the Haight Ashbury District of San Francisco (known as “the Haight”, for short) is now a popular tourist spot and offers many shops and restaurants. Always popular, the Haight has a very unique charm all its own — it is indeed very difficult to “haight” this neighborhood! Trivia: Before 1900, the Haight had well over 1,000 Victorian houses. The Haight survived the 1906 earthquake and fires largely untouched. As a result, most of those grand old Victorians, Edwardians, and Queen Annes survived. Many were later divided into smaller housing units, though, especially in the 1960’s as the housing demands soared for this popular neighborhood. “Hippie” was a derogatory term coined by the Beat poets, who called their counterparts “junior hipsters”, which later became shortened to “hippies”. Famous former homes of musicians (but not any more): Janis Joplin, 112 Lyon; Graham Nash,737 Buena Vista West; Grateful Dead, 710 Ashbury; Jefferson Airplane, 130 Delmar (shown on the back of the album “Surrealistic Pillow”), and of course they even named another album after their later mansion just outside the Haight — 2400 Fulton.
