The Forest Hill neighborhood of San Francisco is bordered by Golden Gate Heights to the west, Forest Knolls to the north, Midtown Terrace to the east, and West Portal and Forest Hill Extension to the south — all good neighborhoods. Forest Hill was developed along with St. Francis Wood, Balboa Terrace, Monterey Heights, and Westwood Park, upon land that was once part of Adolph Sutro’s 1,000 acre estate. 725 of Sutro’s acres were purchased in 1911 by the A.S. Baldwin Residential Development Company, and the aforementioned five neighborhoods went into the planning and development phase, all to be built over the next roughly 15 years. The Forest Hill district of San Francisco is a residential neighborhood, comprised of larger custom built houses that are situated on good sized lots, with plenty of space between the homes. The predominant, if not exclusive, housing type or style is that of the single family detached house. Due to the altitude, some of the homes have views. Forest Hill is one of San Francisco’s most charming residential neighborhoods, with some stunningly gorgeous homes. The Forest Hill subdivision of San Francisco was planned and landscaped by Mark Daniels, who had previously completed his gorgeous Sea Cliff development a year or two prior. One landmark of the Forest Hill district is a triangular plot of grass with a massive urn, creating a formal entrance of sorts for the neighborhood. Houses of various sizes and styles can be found on the curving streets of Forest Hill — in general, they are quite beautiful, as this is one of the city’s more charming neighborhoods. Take a drive to the end of Mendosa Avenue and you will find a park, with a gorgeous view, well worth the trip.
