Grant Avenue, in Chinatown, was the first street in San Francisco, originally laid out in 1835, and was originally called Calle de Fundacion, then Dupont Street, then Du Pon Gao (Du Pont street in Chinese), and finally Grant after the US President. Portsmouth Square, on Grant Avenue between Washington and Clay, was San Francisco’s first plaza and original neighborhood. The Kong Chow Temple, which opened on Pine Street in 1857, is the second oldest Chinese Temple in the United States. It is now located at 855 Stockton. The Tin How Temple, at 125 Waverly Place, is the oldest, dating from 1852. Jackson Square, bordered by Columbus, Pacific, Washington, and Sansome streets, contains the only group of downtown buildings to escape the 1906 quake and fires. Most of the structures date to the 1850’s.
