The Anza Vista district of San Francisco would be a perfect rectangle if it weren’t for one block of Masonic Street where the street cuts and slants in a northeastern, instead of a northern, direction. The Anza Vista district is bordered by Lower Pacific Heights to the north, North Panhandle to the south, Western Addition to the east, and Lone Mountain to the west — good neighbors, all. On a small street caled Loraine Court in the Anza Vista district, one will find the four story Neptune Society Columbarium, which was built in 1898 by B.J.S. Cahill and company, and which contains the ashes of thousands of San Franciscans, including those of many prominent pioneer families. About 10,000 of the 30,000 niches remain vacant. The Columbarium was originally part of the Odd Fellows Cemetery, opened in 1865 on 37 acres. Back in 1917, San Francisco passed a law mandating the removal of all cemeteries from within city limits (the remains — uh, well, MOST of them, that is — funding for the operation ran short towards the end and what was undone “remained” undone, so to speak — were moved to Colma, in San Mateo County, just south of Daly City). This was supposedly done for public health reasons, but in actuality it was done because the land in San Francisco was deemed too valuable to be used for burial grounds. (Indeed, some of those 37 acres were in the neighboring Lone Mountain neighborhood, also once filled with cemeteries, before the 1917 ordinance was passed). However, since it was not technically a burial site, the Columbarium survived the ordinance, but was closed for many years. MOST of the graves were exhumed and the remains moved to Colma in San Mateo county. However, due to the lack of funds, SOME of those graves were NOT exhumed … and disclosure of such must therefore be made to prospective homeowners in the area, as virtually all of that 37 acre area was later built upon — WHOOPS! (If Rover digs up any large and/or unusual looking bones, you have been warned…) The Columbarium itself was recently reacquired by the Neptune Society — the building has been restored, and is once again in use and open to the public. The building features a 75 foot high dome with a stained glass roof — the interior of the building is richly decorated and surprisingly beautiful, deserving of a visit for that fact alone. Although Anza Vista is primarily a residential neighborhood, there is a shopping mall on Geary Boulevard. The predominant housing style is the single family detached house, but apartments, flats, condos, and TIC’s may also be found.
