The Twin Peaks district of San Francisco is bordered by Midtown Terrace to the west, Clarendon Heights to the north, Noe Valley and Eureka Valley/Dolores Heights to the east, and Diamond Heights to the south. The Twin Peaks area is a residential "bedroom community" neighborhood of San Francisco. The homes are primarily single family detached houses. Because of the extreme altitude of the Twin Peaks district, many of the homes have beautiful views. The area is surrounded by greenery, with lots of mature trees. If not for the views of downtown San Francisco that many of the homes have, one might think at first that one has arrived in suburbia when one first visits the Twin Peaks district of the city! Twin Peaks is roughly located in the center of San Francisco, and is one of the few places in San Francisco where it is possible to see both the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco bay. There is an amazing 360 degree view of the entire bay area, in fact. Twin Peaks South is 910 feet above sea level and Twin Peaks North is 904 feet above sea level, and as such these are the second and third highest natural elevations in San Francisco. Twin Peaks is generally considered the "fog line" in San Francisco --- Twin Peaks, Mt. Sutro, and Mt. Davidson form a natural barrier that usually blocks the fog from getting much further east into the downtown areas. Thus, the eastern side of San Francisco is generally sunnier and warmer than the western side. San Francisco averages about 1,000 hours of fog each year, but can reach as many as 2,000 hours or more in some years. Sometimes, even the 746 foot towers of the Golden Gate Bridge are covered in fog, made temporarily invisible. Since the earthquake of 1906, there have been only three measurable snowfalls in San Francisco -- the last one was atop Twin Peaks in 1976. In fact, San Francisco has the lowest average summer temperatures of any city in the US, barring Alaska.
