The South Beach district of San Francisco is bordered by the San
Francisco Bay to the east, Mission Bay to the south, South of Market
(SOMA) to the east, and the Financial District to the north. For bay
views, this is a great place! The South Beach district of San
Francisco is, like all downtown neighborhoods, short on space. Thus,
the predominant housing style is condo, townhome, TIC, and
apartment, as opposed to single family detached house. The South
Beach district of San Francisco is an upscale, expensive
neighborhood with a prime location, with many of the homes offering
great views of the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge. With the
ability to walk to many jobs downtown from the South Beach
neighborhood, the "commute" can often be made on foot from this
district. That helps -- because, as with many of the densely
populated neighborhoods in the city, parking is quite difficult
and/or quite expensive in the South Beach district. The South Beach
diet? Well, not really... THIS South Beach has a DIFFERENT version
of the diet -- but you WILL lose weight if you dine at some of the
super-trendy highly acclaimed local restaurants -- your wallet
and/or purse will end up MUCH lighter, for starts -- then, you will
lose weight by standing outside in line for several hours waiting to
get in, even with reservations, and lastly, one healthy
parsely-stuffed carrot later, you, too, will have lost weight. Just
resist the urge to go eat dinner again right afterwards, ok?! What's
that? The picture of the Golden Gate bridge that the chef drew in
chocolate raspberry sauce all over your 20-inch diameter plate (with
carrot nicely centered upon it) was just too beautiful to eat? Oh,
no!!! Relax -- there are a few eateries in the area that serve food
as opposed to art -- go visit one of those after you've taken a
picture of the artwork on your plate! Trivia: The beautiful and
historic Audiffred Building at Mission and Steuart was built in 1889
by Hippolite d'Audiffred, a Parisian who wanted his building to
reflect the style of the Champs Elysees in Paris. The building was
first a warehouse, and then the headquarters of the first seamen's
union in the world. d'Audiffred made a fortune selling charcoal from
the building, to people who needed it as fuel for heating. He saved
the building from the fires of the 1906 earthquake with a bit of
quick thinking: he bribed the firemen with free booze from the
Bulkhead Saloon, located within his building! It was the only
downtown building on the south waterfront to survive the fires --
and the firemen were all too "happy" to save it! Baron & Chestney

No, this is NOT where the South Beach diet originated! (Unless you
define the South Beach diet as dining upon the tiny little portions
that many of the local highly acclaimed restaurants will serve you
at astronomical prices per plate, that is -- we suppose that COULD
be an effective dieting technique after all -- it IS hard to get fat
while dining on a $200 stuffed carrot, n'est-ce pas?!) The South
Beach District of San Francisco is roughly bordered by the San
Francisco bay to the east, Market Street to the north, Townsend to
the south, and Main, Essex, and Third streets to the west (this is
another unusually shaped district). The South Beach neighborhood is
officially designated as neighborhood 9h by the San Francisco
Association of Realtors, as it is part of District 9 (Central east),
Subdistrict H. This is a hip, chic neighborhood with trendy
restaurants and modern condos and a price tag that is much steeper
on average than in the nearby SOMA district. Baron & Chestney offers

1 Clock Tower, Ferry Building, South Beach District, San Francisco. The hands of the clock stopped for both the 1906 earthquake (Wednesday, April 18, 1906, 5:12 am), and the 1898 quake (Tuesday, October 17, 1989, 5:04 pm), and remained stuck for quite some time in both cases.

3 The infamous "sculpture" by Jose "Villiancourt" (actually Vaillancourt), a Canadian "artist" from Montreal, in Justin Herman Plaza. Originally, it was thought to be a contruction yard with spare parts for the freeway. Once that work was completed, it was thought to be many things -- one San Franciscan called it the excrement of a square dog --- and Bono of U2 called it a giant urinal (and used it as such, after first graffitting it). The "artist", Jose "Villiancourt", supposedly flew to a U2 concert in Oakland a few years later and attempted to return the favor upon the stage, but was stopped by security...
