Soquel (pronounced "SO-kell") is a small, unincorporated Santa Cruz County town located east of Santa Cruz and north of Highway 1, Live Oak, and Capitola. It stretches roughly from De Laveaga Park to Cabrillo Community College. Soquel was founded in 1852, as a general store/post office, soon followed by a hotel and a church, and still has, as evidence of that fact, a few old buildings and a graveyard dating way back to its beginnings as a place where farmers and travelers would come to get provisions and supplies. The town was named after one of the Indian villages/tribes that used to live there, before the Spanish settled the area -- the Spaniards referred to the native people as the Soquel Indians, and the name has remained for the town. Having developed later than Live Oak, and Santa Cruz, Soquel has some newer homes and exclusive neighborhoods, some of which are quite extravagant. Children in Soquel attend schools in the Soquel Elementary District, and then attend either Soquel High or Harbor High.
