Sonoma is a small, historic city located in the southeastern part of Sonoma County. The population of Sonoma is about 10,000 people. Sonoma incorporated in 1900, but it has a rich history that extends back more than 50 years prior. At Sonoma, the northernmost of all the California missions, Spain's reach into California ended with a mission and a barracks, and here the Bear Flag was raised for the first time and the first blow was struck for the U.S. conquest of California. However, most residential development, on the other hand, did not happen until 50 years after the city incorporated, or 100 years after the Bear Flag was first flown. The old historic buildings still remain, and the newer city has been built up around them. The town square is downright charming and perfect for a stroll -- restaurants, shops, cafes, etc. are all there. In 2004, the California state census counted 5,018 residential housing units in Sonoma. Of these, 2,828 were single family detached houses, 690 were single family attached homes, 1,063 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 437 were mobile homes. Thinking about commuting from Sonoma? Unless you work nearby, you would be better off thinking of Sonoma as a place to visit, vacation, or even retire to -- but not to commute from -- as a result of its distance from most bay area employment centers.
