Sebastopol is a small Sonoma County City with a "country" flavor to it. The population of Sebastopol is about 8,000 people. Sebastopol was once famous for its Gravenstein apples, but the most popular (and lucrative) crop these days seems to be wine grapes, instead. The 2004 California state census counted 3,351 residential housing units in Sebastopol. Of these, 2,007 were single family detached houses, 253 were single family attached homes, 1,032 were apartments, condos, or townhomes, and 59 were mobile homes. Sebastopol is served by the Sebastopol Elementary School District, as well as by the West Sonoma High School district, which runs Analy High School (whose unusual name makes it the "butt" of way more than one too many jokes!) in Sebastopol. School rankings are generally in the top 20% of California public schools. Sebastopol is home to a lot of artists and craftspeople. Some residents make bizarre life sized "sculptures" of people, animals, trains, boats -- you name it-- out of junk items like old bikes, musical instruments, giant cans or barrels, old tires, wires, furniture, appliances, you name it -- and then paint them and put them out on their front lawns. The neighbors try to compete and one-up each other, making multiple sculptures, scenes, etc. -- sort of like Christmas yard decorations, but these are permanent and some have a rather bizarre subject matter, and some are not very much in keeping with the holiday spirit... You've got to see it to believe it -- it's quite unique and gives this town a sort of "Twilight Zone" feeling to it... Thinking about commuting to San Francisco? Think carefully about it -- unless you work odd hours or are a very patient person -- the traffic along Hwy 101 can be staggering. You can reach the Sebastopol Chamber of Commerce at 707-823-3032. Sebastopol is a small country style city located about 10 miles outside of Santa Rosa. The city dates well back into the mid 1800's. This is a small and intimate town in which everybody knows everybody. There is a volunteer fire department. The crime rate is very low. The city has for years been trying to resist the temptations of growth while trying to fine tune the smaller commerce in an attempt to boost the economy. But, as more apple businesses are closing down, more land is becoming available -- how long that land can remain undeveloped will be interesting to see.
