Scotts Valley is a small, upscale city that straddles Highway 17, in northern Santa Cruz County. The population of Scotts Valley is about 12,000 people. Scotts Valley is the first city one encounters when commuting south from Silicon Valley. Still, the traffic along Highway 17 is infamously horrible, so the commute can still be atrocious. Scotts Valley is indeed a true valley, surrounded by redwoods and hills. Scotts Valley has 4,565 total housing units as of the last official census count. 2,463 of these are single family detached houses, 415 are single attached homes, 833 are apartments, townhouses, or condos, and 804 are mobile homes. Santa Cruz is by far the largest nearby city, and it is located about 5 minutes south of Scotts Valley. Scotts Valley has very low crime rates, and good schools. Children attend schools in the Scotts Valley Unified School District, which generally scores in the 80th to 90th percentile of California public schools. Okay, okay -- so, WHO was SCOTT? He was Hiram Scott, of Maine -- he arrived by merchant marine in Monterey in 1846, joined the gold rush and struck it rich, and then went to Santa Cruz County in 1852 and bought the whole Scotts Valley area for $25,000 and turned it into a giant farm supplying hay and potatoes and raising horses. Scotts Valley is the northernmost city in Santa Cruz County, located just off the commute nightmare and "highway from hell" that is formally known as Highway 17. Scotts Valley was mostly just farm land for over a hundred years, but it incorporated in 1966 and grew quickly through the 1970's and 1980's. Most of the housing is located on the south side and about the mid north on both sides of Highway 17. Scotts Valley actually is a valley, surrounded by wooded hills that are peppered with homes that aren't actually in town, but are so far out in the boonies that, for lack of any other point of reference, claim to be in Scotts Valley! The tiny towns of Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, Brookdale, Felton, and Mt. Hermon are all nearby, located off the long and winding "road to nowhere" (well, actually, it eventually ends up in Saratoga) that is otherwise called Highway 9. Santa Cruz lies to the south, down Highway 17. Either way, Scotts Valley is somewhat isolated. Crime is low and schools are decent.
