Sausalito is the southernmost Marin County city, located just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. The population of Sausalito is about 8,000 people. Sausalito has a reputation for being a favorite destination of tourits, since it is so easily accessible and is the first place they encounter when crossing the bridge. While the tourists bring traffic and congestion (about 1.5 million visitors per year), they also bring their business and money for the city's coffers. Sausalito has many little businesses and a decent sized commercial district, in fact, especially for a small city. This is a very picturesque and charming town, with great views and much to see and do. The downtown is perfect for strolling, with ample shops and restaurants, and art galleries, too. Residentially, the streets are very narrow and winding with little parking, and climb up into the hills, and the houses are built either into a hill, or hanging off a hill, for the most part. Land is scarce, and so there are not many yards or even parks, for that matter. The views, as a result, are spectacular, in general -- the bay, Angel Island, and for some, San Francisco itself. Because of its distance to the bridge, the commute from Sausalito to San Francisco is the best Marin county has to offer. Ferries are also available. During World War II, Sausalito was a building palce for Liberty Ships. Some of its industrial/ commercial warehouse district remained. Crime is low in Sausalito. The school district, which includes neighboring Marin City, is not very large -- in fact, Sausalito has a median resident age of 45, and an amazingly small number of kids -- only 7% of the population. As a result, not much emphasis is placed on the public schools -- in fact, most parents in Sausalito seem to send their kids to private schools. In 2004, the California state census counted 4,529 residential housing units in Sausalito, of which 1,724 were single family detached houses, 423 were single family attached, 2,158 were apartments, condos, and townhouses, and 224 were mobile homes. Sausalito is Spanish for "place of little willows". Spanish Explorer Juan de Ayala, who was the first Spaniard to sail through the golden gate, dropped anchor near some little willows, and thereby named the spot. Sausalito borders the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and also the city of Mill Valley. One of the bay area's few ungated marinas helps to make Sausalito a popular destination for boating enthusiasts as well. A great place for strolling, shopping, and dining, Sausalito hosts the very popular Sausalito Arts Festival each September. You can reach the chamber of commerce at 415-331-7262.
