San Rafael is the most populous city in Marin County, with over 57,000 residents. San Rafael is also the county seat for Marin County, featuring the county government center that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, which is is the most popular tourist attraction in the county, following only Muir Woods. San Rafael's history goes way back to 1817, when the Franciscans built the historic Mission San Rafael. The city incorporated in 1874 and then began building and expanding. Starting with the downtown, San Rafael began building outwards. The downtown still seems to combine an "old-town" historic feel along with modern infrastucture -- San Rafael has put together one of the most entertaining and charming downtowns in the entire bay area, in fact. In a similar fashion, the residential developments in San Rafael run the gamut in terms of age, style, size, and price, but in general, this is an older town, in a county that is very anti-development. The utility lines, for example, are above ground -- when most of San Rafael was built, it wasn't fashionable to bury them. Still, most of the homes are neat and well kept -- San Rafael is, after all, Marin County -- and even moreso, it is the county seat. You certainly won't find any rundown neighborhoods here! The San Rafael schools range somewhat in their rankings, with the Dixie elementary schools landing in the 80th and 90th percentiles, and the San Rafael elementary schools ranging from the 50th to 90th percentiles, depending upon the school. The middle schools land in the 60th percentile, and the High Schools range from the 50th to 70th percentile (San Rafael High), to the 90th percentile (Terra Linda High), so it is important to check on the school districts that serve a particular address. In 2004, the California state census counted 23,398 housing units in San Rafael, of which 10,592 were single family detached houses, 2,020 were single family attached homes, 10,297 were apartments, condos, and townhouses, and 489 were mobile homes. Often lacking a labor force due to the wealth of its inhabitants and their having no need to work themsleves, Marin County "imports" much of its work force from other places -- Sonoma County is one, and also many of those who work in San Rafael (and Marin County in general) commute from West Contra Costa County via the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.
