San Lorenzo is an unincorporated neighborhood located between San Leandro and Hayward, west of interstate 880. The population of San Lorenzo is about 24,000 people. Like many bay area cities, San Lorenzo saw major growth following World War II, as veterans returned seeking affordable housing in the bay area. Prior to World War II, San Lorenzo was primarily farmland. During the war, it was a place for workers in the east bay's war industry to call home. Since it is unincorporated, San Lorenzo is governed by the Alameda County board of supervisors, in Oakland. The weather is great, the commute is good, and crime is fairly low. San Lorenzo's school district won a grant in 2001 that enabled it to equip almost every student from grades 4 to 12 with a laptop! Now, if we could only get them to use it for SCHOLASTIC ACTIVITIES, instead of for playing video games, watching adult videos, and surfing pornographic websites, we could actually make some progress... remember, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink...! Children in San Lorenzo attend schools at either San Lorenzo High or Arroyo High, both in the San Lorenzo Unified High School District. Call the chamber of commerce at 510-351-1481. San Lorenzo is unincorporated. That means that it is governed by the Oakland board of supervisors. It belongs to the Hayward Park and Recreation district, and offers many activities, such as a golf course and a community swim center. In general, San Lorenzo shows nice pride of ownership, with neat, well kept homes and lawns. San Lorenzo is served by the San Lorenzo Unified School District, and is within easy driving distance of Chabot Community College and Cal State Hayward. The weather is very nice, and the commute is not bad. San Lorenzo has some nice things to offer in terms of affordable housing, as well, and since it is an unincorporated area, it doesn't get as much attention as nearby Hayward and San Leandro, so it is certainly worth looking at.
