Rohnert Park is a modern suburban Sonoma County city with a population of about 44,000 people. Rohnert Park is home to Sonoma State University. However, the city has been designed more to be a quiet suburban town for family life and kids (there is no formal downtown area) -- so college students often have to head elsewhere (Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Cotati) for their entertainment. Rohnert Park shares a school district with its neighbor, Cotati. Rohnert Park has an unusual police and fire system -- police and firefighters are one and the same people, and they are called "public safety officers". They work out of the "public safety department", and their cars have both POLICE and FIRE written on them! If there ever was an example of cross-training, it doesn't get much better than that. We know of only one other bay area city that uses this system -- Sunnyvale, in Santa Clara County. It seems to work well for them, too. Perhaps other bay area cities will eventually adopt a similar program. The California state census in 2004 counted 15,977 housing units in Rohnert Park, of which 7,660 were single family detached houses, 1,698 were single family attached homes, 5,206 were apartments, condos, and townhouses, and 1,413 were mobile homes. Rohnert Park is somewhat of a rarity in the bay area -- a newer city. Almost the entire city has been built since the 1950's, when the land was purchased from a farmer named Rohnert. It is a pure suburb, with little history and no actual "downtown".
