The Richmond district of San Francisco is comprised of the Outer
Richmond, the Central Richmond, and the Inner Richmond
neighborhoods, in order, from west to east. In general, the further
from the Ocean one goes, the less foggy the Richmond district
becomes ... but in general, this is not one of the sunnier parts of
San Francisco. Nevertheless, it certainly has its own charm, and, in
general, the Richmond district is considered one of the city's
safer, quieter neighborhoods. Although one can find apartments,
TIC's, and condos in the Richmond district, the predominant housing
style is generally the single family detached house. The Richmond
district of San Francisco is mostly a residential "bedroom
community", but shops, restaurants, and other small businesses can
be found, especially along Geary and Clement streets. Before it was
developed, starting in about 1910, the Richmond District was made up
of miles of sand dunes, and the area was often called the "Great
Sand Waste", as a result, although the proper name was the "Outside
Lands". In an effort to avoid confusion with the old, already
established city of Richmond in the east bay, the Richmond district
was originally named "Park Presidio". However, the name never stuck,
and the area came to be known instead as the Richmond district.

The Richmond district, also called "the Richmond", is a general term
that is often used to refer to one of the three neighborhoods that
comprise the very large area that makes up the Richmond district --
the Outer Richmond, the Central Richmond, and the Inner Richmond.
The three neighborhoods are connected, and they basically run from
the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Jordan Park/Laurel Heights and
Lone Mountain neighborhoods, running parallel to and just north of
Golden Gate Park. For more information about the specific
neighborhoods, please click on the appropriate album link (scroll
down to the links at the bottom of this page) for the Outer
Richmond, Central Richmond, or Inner Richmond. Surrounded by Golden
Gate Park to the south and the Presidio to the north, the Richmond
District is one of the biggest residential areas of San Francisco.
