Pleasant Hill is a northern Contra Costa County city with a population of about 35,000 people. Although primarily a bedroom town, Pleasant Hill does a nice job of combining the residential areas with stores, restaurants, and other businesses into a town center environment. In recent years, major renovations were done to Contra Costa Boulevard, the main drag that goes through town. Pleasant Hill is effectively the transition from Walnut Creek to Concord, or vice versa, located between the two. Although in the past Pleasant Hill has leaned more towards Concord, after all of the redevelopemnt and new construction, it now seems to have more in common with Walnut Creek. The school scores are fairly high, crime is low, and the commute is not too bad, provided you take BART -- Pleasant Hill does have its own station. Pleasant Hill is served by the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. Pleasant Hill is home to Diablo Valley College, or DVC, which functions as a sort of giant community recreation center for residents. For a few dollars, one can register in almost any class or activity offered by the college. In fact, as was recently revealed in a massive scandal that was widely publicized in the news, for SEVERAL dollars MORE, students can even PURCHASE a GOOD GRADE in almost any class the school offers, as well! DVC had been curiously famous for advancing students on to excellent universities in recent years -- including the best one of all, the University of California at Berkeley. NOW, we know WHY!!! We can only hope that the students who purchased their grades at DVC quickly found out that "the buck stops" at UC Berkeley, and soon failed out, as only the cream of the cream rises to the top at Cal... The California State Census in 2004 counted a total of 14,214 residential housing units in Pleasant Hill. Of these, 8,436 were single family detached houses, 1,573 were single family attached homes, 4,153 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 52 were mobile homes. Like to read?
