Pittsburg is an East Contra Costa County city with a population of about 65,000 people. Like its neighbor, Antioch, Pittsburg is an old city that has recently seen a lot of development and new home construction. In 1996, BART extended its service out to Pittsburg, which helped attract more residents to the city, since it made the commute bearable. Pittsburg was originally a fishing village, and then a coal mining town. During World War II, it was an industrial center to help support the war effort. After the war, the construction of the freeways helped to revitalize Pittsburg and make it a suburban residential destination. Pittsburg is home to Los Medanos community college, which offers many classes and activities that are open to the general public. Most of the new housing has been built south of the freeway -- and Pittsburg has tripled its population in the last three decades. The 2004 California state census counted 19,447 residential housing units in Pittsburg, of which 12,887 were single family detached houses, 1,296 were single family attached houses, 4,594 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and and 670 were mobile homes.
