In fact, like Moraga, Lafayette, and Walnut Creek, the other cities located along the Hwy 24 corridor and belonging to the perenially award-winning Acalanes Union High School district, Orinda was largely settled by (and is still largely inhabited by) many a University of California Alumni and their family. It's no wonder, then, that education is highly prized and strongly supported in these towns, and as a result the schools are exemplary -- and the housing prices are accordingly steep... Add in a BART station, beautiful mature trees, rolling hills, and the fact that Orinda has access to "over the hill" regions via Fish Ranch Road and even San Pablo Dam Road, and one can grasp the appeal of Orinda. While Contra Costa County can get scorching hot in the summers, Orinda is the first Contra Costa County city east of the Caldecott Tunnell to catch the breeze when the winds roll in off the bay, and its mature foliage and hilly landscape help add shade, as well, to lessen the intense summer heat. Orinda also borders Tilden Park, one of the biggest and best regional parks in the bay area. The Acalanes Union High School district is one of the most consistently highly rated in all of California -- featuring the "fearsome foursome" of high schools in their corresponding cities: Miramonte in Orinda, Campolindo in Moraga, Acalanes in Lafayette, and Las Lomas in Walnut Creek.
