Novato is the second most populous Marin County city (second only to San Rafael), and the northernmost, as well. Novato was named after a Spanish land grant, Rancho de Novato, and is built over small hills and valleys, covering a very large land area. The population of Novato is about 50,000 people, and, quite unique for Marin county, Novato is actually growing, and fairly rapidly at that. The main reason is the development of a former military base, Hamilton Air Field. It was opened in 1932, closed in 1974, and then the county argued over what to do with it for the next 25 years, as is typical of Marin's classic anti-development stance. Almost all of the military personnel departed, and they were replaced by the new residents of Novato. The development, brilliantly called "Hamilton", began in 1997, and still continues. Phase one is complete, and phase two has begun. This will be a development that will take many years to complete. Over 2,500 acres adjoining Hamilton will be turned into wetlands and parks, even after completion of the development. School rankings in Novato are generally high, ranking in the 80th to 90th percentiles statewide. Crime is low. The California state census counted 19,852 residential housing units in Novato in 2004 -- 11,624 were single family detached houses, 2,668 were single family attached units, 4,842 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 718 were mobile homes. Novato is bordered by about 3,500 acres of regional or state parks, as well as the massive Bel Marin Keys, a shoefront wetlands area with miles of trails. As far as commutes go, the commute from Novato is better than any commute from a Sonoma county city, but it can be quite trying, unless you work unusual hours. Think in terms of telecommuting, working unusual shifts, and maybe working unusual days, as well -- or, get a very comfortable car with a great stereo and dvd system to keep you busy as you sit in traffic...
