The Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco is bordered by the San Francisco Bay to the east, South Beach and South of Market (SOMA) to the north, and Potrero Hill to the west. Development plans for Mission Bay call for 6,000 new residential units, office towers, and many biotechnical and medical research facilities, as well. The present site of the Mission Bay Development project is just over 300 acres large. The area starts at the Giants baseball park and extends south along the waterfront to 16th street. In the 1860's, this area was a railyard for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, and continued as such for over a century. In 1981, the company decided to sell its land and proposed a huge development project to the city. As usual, things got wrapped up in red tape for many years, but a few years ago construction finally began. The University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) has decided to locate its Health Sciences campus at Mission Bay, near Third and 16th streets, and ongoing development continues. Just watch this area explode with growth over the coming has already started, as even many long term San Francisco residents are absolutely shocked at the scope (and speed) of the numerous and varied projects under development in the Mission Bay district. The area is now already virtually unrecognizable to many long term residents and native San Franciscans alike. Mission Bay and the neighboring SOuth of MArket (SOMA) and Central Waterfront districts have been radically transformed, as a result of the massive amounts of ongoing construction and redevelopment. The end result will likely be a spectacular transformation for these long overlooked neighborhoods, which are among the "last frontiers" in San Francisco, in fact... estate needs, call Baron & Chestney, today.
