The Miraloma Park district of San Francisco is bordered by Diamond Heights to the northeast, Midtown Terrace to the north, Forest Hill Extension to the northwest, Sunnyside to the south, and Westwood Highlands and Sherwood Forest to the southwest. The Miraloma Park district of San Francisco is mostly comprised of single family detached houses. This is a nice neighborhood, and the homes are nicely kept. Due to the altitude (thanks to nearby Mt. Davidson), many of the houses in Miraloma Park have great views. This is a "bedroom community" neighborhood of the city, with somewhat of a suburban feel to it. Miraloma Park is a quiet neighborhood in which you can park your car on the street, even overnight, and still find it in one piece in the morning. Mount Davidson itself comprises about a quarter of the land in the Miraloma Park district. At 938 feet above sea level, Mt. Davidson is the highest natural point in San Francisco. (By contrast, the lowest point in the city is at 5th and Berry, and is about 6 feet below sea level). It was named in 1911 for George Davidson, who surveyed it in 1862 for the US Government. Previously, and on old maps of San Francisco, it had been known as Blue Mountain. Compared to Mt. Davidson, some of the city's famous hills rank as follows -- Twin Peaks, 910 and 904 feet above sea level, Nob Hill, 376 feet above sea level, Pacific Heights, 370 feet above sea level, Russsian Hill, 294 feet above sea level, and Telegraph Hill, 284 feet above sea level. Easter services are held every year (since 1923) at the base of the 103 foot high cross that sits atop the mountain. The current cross dates back to 1934 and is the fifth one to stand in that spot. The cross used to be lit every evening, until in 1989, a group challenged the constitutionality of a religious display on city-owned land, and won. The Easter services are still held, but the cross doesn't get lit any more.
