Martinez is the county seat of Contra Costa County. The population of Martinez is about 50,000 people. Martinez is an interesting mix of old historic downtown and new suburbs, along with some industry and some of the nicest rural land in the county. Martinez is served by two school districts -- Martinez Unified and Mt. Diablo Unified. Martinez is generally divided north or south of Hwy 4, with the old part of town being to the north of Hwy 4, and the new part of town being to the south of Hwy 4. Martinez actually has 2 oil refineries in town. The refineries have always endeared themselves to the residents by supporting local activities and donating to city causes. It seems to work, and they coexist peacefully. Shell has been in town since 1913. To warn people when something goes wrong at one of the refineries, a siren sounds. However, due to regular testing of it and the locals' familiarity with it, a study has shown that people have learned to ignore the sirens, since they think it is always a test! Good system, huh?! Martinez is an old city, and the county seat as well -- as a result, it has much parkland, and many government jobs, as well as lots of law enforcement, since the California Highway Patrol, The City of Martinez Police, and the Contra Costa Sheriff all have offices in town. In 2004, the California state census counted 14,897 residential housing units, of which 9,551 were single family detached houses, 2,237 were single family attached homes, 3,085 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 24 were mobile homes.
