The Marina district is bordered by the San Francisco Bay to the
north, Russian Hill to the east, Cow Hollow to the south, and the
Presidio to the west. It doesn't get much better than that. But, be
prepared to shake, rattle and roll in an earthquake -- the Marina is
largely built on landfill... at the time of the great earthquake
(and subsequent fires) of 1906, the Marina was underwater.
Considering the amount of damage that occured in the 1989 Loma
Prieta quake, which was essentially 1/30th the strength of the 1906
quake, one shudders to think what might have occured if the Marina
District had been built up way back in 1906... the sandy landfill is
subject to "liquefaction" during a quake -- in other words, it takes
on the consistency of a bowl of Jello... not the best of foundations
upon which to build! Ironically, some of the landfill that was used
to build the Marina district was much of the debris from the 1906
earthquake -- talk about recycling! But even we must admit that the
Marina District of San Francisco is easily one of the prettiest
neighborhoods in all of the city, with so much to offer that one
just can't help but love it... The Marina District was man-made,
created in 1915 from landfill for the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition
(also from which the Palace of Fine Arts is one of the few remaining
buildings). During construction for the fair, 635 acres of marshland
were filled with sand and a seawall was built along the shoreline.
Once the expo was over, most of the temporary buildings were
removed, and then the real estate developers and builders and
speculators stepped in. Through the 1920's, streets were laid out,
and the homes were built. The dredging of the bay (for landfill
sand) created enough deep water to build a yacht harbor. Baron &

Easily one of the nicest neighborhoods in San Francisco, the Marina district of San Francisco is roughly bordered by the San Francisco bay to the north, Van Ness to the east, Lyon to the west, and Lombard Street to the south. The Marina neighborhood of San Francisco is officially designated as neighborhood 7a by the San Francisco Association of Realtors, as it is part of District 7 (North), Subdistrict A. Unfortunately, there is a bit of a catch to this excellent location -- much of the Marina District is built on landfill, and as a result, the area was hit hard in the 1989 earthquake, suffering extensive damage. The shops and restaurants, as well as the amazing views and some of San Francisco's finest homes along Marina Blvd., though, still make the region extremely popular among tourists and locals alike.
