Los Altos is a quiet bedroom community located on the lower peninsula, about 30 miles south of San Francisco and 15 miles north of San Jose. The population in Los Altos is about 29,000 people. Los Altos homes typically sit on larger lots, with tree lined streets. Despite being located in Santa Clara County, at the edge of Silicon Valley, Los Altos still maintains somewhat of a peninsula feel, as does neighboring Palo Alto, Los Altos Hills, and even Mountain View. Los Altos, despite the Spanish translation ("the heights") actually has few hills. You have to go to Los Altos Hills (and pay another million or so) to get those. Single family detached homes represent 89% of homes in Los Altos -- not many apartments, condos, or townhouses here. In 2004, the California state census counted 10,748 residential housing units, of which 9,184 were single family detached houses, 364 were single family attached homes, 1,184 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 16 were mobile homes. All schools in the Los Altos Elementary School District have been designated "distinguished", meaning the state thinks they are well run. Older students attend schools in the Mountain View - Los Altos High School District. One problem with the city is internal traffic which congests along certain main commercial streets. Los Altos loves a good hairdo -- there are 41 beauty salons in this city (!) By comparison, there are only 44 restaurants -- roughly one per hair salon! As a result, the city has actually passed an ordinance to tame people's manes -- banning new hair salons on two downtown streets! Don't pull your hair out, though -- Los Altos is still a great town for a downtown stroll, with over 150 shops (so what if roughly a quarter of them are hair salons!) in a 6 block downtown triangle, shaded by lovely mature trees. You can call the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce at 650-948-1455 -- for kicks, tell them you'd like to open a hair salon!
