Lafayette is an upscale Contra Costa County city located along Highway 24, west of Walnut Creek and east of Orinda and Moraga. The population of Lafayette is about 25,000 people. Like many bay area cities, Lafayette began as a farming community, and then became a suburban town after World War II. AFter incorporating itself in 1968, Lafayette then began it's anti-development ways, which have essentially continued through to today (again like many bay area cities). Lafayette puts the "LA" into "LAMORINDA", an area comprised of the neighboring towns, LAfayette, MORaga, and OrINDA. Justy like Orinda and Moraga, Lafayette places a high value on schools, as the town was largely settled by U.C. Berkeley alums and professors who ventured east through the Caldecott or over the hill. Indeed, many other parents followed them over the years, moving to Lafayette (and Lamorinda) simply for the schools. Lafayette has its own BART station, as do Orinda and Walnut Creek, which helps with the commute, since the traffic along Hwy 24 can easily become a nightmare during commute hours. In general, the crime rate is low, the school scores are high, the commute is OK (via BART), and the weather is generally sunny and warm most of the time in Lafayette. In recent years, Lafayette has been making the news because it is home to a massive hillside war memorial, covered with little white wooden crosses, one for each soldier killed in Iraq. The number is almost 4,000 at this writing. The display is quite visible because of its position on a hillside right along Hwy 24 and the BART line as well. Lafayette has relatively few parks, but the Lafayette Reservoir is perhaps the most popular. The 2004 California State Census counted 9,422 residential housing units in Lafayette, of which 7,480 were single family detached houses, 294 were single family attached homes, and 1,648 were apartments, condos, or townhouses.
