La Honda is a lower peninsula San Mateo County town located southwest of Portola Valley. An unincorporated area, La Honda has a population of about 2,000 people. La Honda is a very rural community -- there are redwood trees everywhere, and the lots are often several wooded acres large. Homes are built in the hills. La Honda was, until 1997, the home of author Ken Kesey, of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" fame. He and his band of friends, calling themselves the Merry Pranksters, were part of the 1960's countercultural movement. They were infamous for throwing wild parties at the Kesey cabin, and then hopping into their bus and driving around bringing packets of LSD to parties all over the bay area and daring partygoers to see if they could "pass the acid test". Kesey sold his cabin in 1997, and later died in 2001. Years ago, well before Kesey and his gang, La Honda was a logging camp and a bootlegger's hideout during prohibition. La Honda is surrounded by state parks and protected from the fog by the surrounding mountains. La Honda has one elementary school -- older kids attend schools in Pescadero.
