The Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco is bordered by Alamo Square to the north, Van Ness/Civic Center to the east, Mission Dolores and the Duboce Triangle to the south, and Haight Ashbury and Buena Vista Park to the west. So, who was Hayes, and why was it named Hayes Valley? No, it was not President Hayes, though that would be a very reasonable guess. It was the original landowner of this neighborhood -- one-time San Francisco mayor Tom Hayes, who owned a 160 acre tract of land between Alamo and Duboce parks. His estate burned down in 1872. Hayes Valley has undergone several transformations over the years, rising and falling in popularity as the freeway has come and gone, generally. Whereas at one point the neighborhood was virtually abandoned, it has more recently been revitalized and is rediscovering its rich history. Whereas many of the old Victorians, Queen Annes, and Edwardians had been divided into apartments and many were even torn down, those which remain are now seeing a lot of restoration to their original appearance. Hayes Valley enjoys a location close to everything -- very conveniently and centrally located to downtown, as well as freeway access. The Hayes Valley neighborhood blends residential and commercial space well, as there are plenty of restaurants, shops, cafes, and small businesses within an easy stroll -- one need not have a car in Hayes Valley.
