The Golden Gate Heights neighborhood of San Francisco is bordered by the Inner Sunset District to the north, the Forest Hill district to the east, the Inner Parkside district to the west, and the West Portal neighborhood to the south -- all good neighbors to have. The Golden Gate Heights district is an unusual neighborhood that is completely surrounded by the Inner Sunset and Inner Parkside districts -- it rises up steeply into the hills above the surrounding areas. The Golden Gate Heights district is comprised predominantly, if not exclusively, of single family detached houses -- the homes are large, with decent sized lots and separation between the homes. Many are built either into or "hanging off" the hillsides, as a result of the very steep and hilly terrain. The result: views, views, and more views. This is an exclusively residential neighborhood -- no stores here. Somehow, the neighborhood seems to not attract much attention to itself, "flying under the radar" for the most part, largely because of its somewhat isolated geographic location -- and even if you questioned native San Franciscans, many of them could not accurately tell you where Golden Gate Heights is located or how to get there. A well kept secret -- well, maybe it was until now, that is... The Golden Gate Heights neighborhood of San Francisco is a very irregularly shaped area, bounded by 14th and 16th avenues to the west, 9th, Funston, and Noriega to the east, Taraval, San Marcos, and Mendosa to the south, and Lawton, Noriega, and Ortega to the north. (You really must consult a map to understand this description-- this is a highly unusually shaped district...) The neighborhood partially lives up to its name, though -- plenty of heights. Views of the Golden Gate are more rare -- but there are plenty of views of the Pacific Ocean, as well as of other parts of the city, to be had from this elevation. Some homes do indeed have Golden Gate views, as well. There are lots of narrow, windy, steep roads here -- but this is still a very nice (and quite surprisingly often overlooked, somehow!) neighborhood of San Francisco, with nice homes and a very "suburban neighborhood" feel to it. The Golden Gate Heights district is officially designated as neighborhood 2A by the San Francisco Association of Realtors, and is part of District 2 (Central West), Subdistrict A.
