Foster City offers an excellent quality of living on the San Mateo peninsula. Located roughly mid-peninsula, the city is connected to the east bay via the San Mateo Bridge, which connects Foster City to Hayward. The population of Foster City is about 30,000 people. The city is designed around a lagoon and a series of canals -- think Venice, Italy meets the San Francisco bay area! Foster City has 19 parks, spread over 200 acres of open space. Trivia: the tallest building between Los Angeles and San Francisco is located in Foster City -- it is the Metro Center, at 22 stories high. Foster City has several biotech companies in town, as well as other businesses -- about 600 in total -- which means you can have a great commute by moving to Foster City if you work there. Almost all homes in the city were built within the last 40 years, ever since Jack Foster purchased an island that was formerly used for growing hay, and then built the city from scratch. He devised a creative financing scheme, had the city master planned, built the streets, brought in endless tons of landfill (sand dredged from the bay, mostly), built bridges, carved out lagoons, installed sewer and utility lines, and built homes. All in a day's work, huh?! The city incorporated in 1971. Call the chamber of commerce at 650-573-7600. Foster City is served by two school districts -- the San Mateo-Foster City District covers grades K-8. After that, kids move up to schools of the San Mateo Union High School District, which includes San Mateo High and Hillsdale High. Foster City elementary schools generally score in the 70th to 90th percentiles among California public schools, while the two high schools generally land in the 70th to 80th percentiles. The state counted 12,449 residential housing units in Foster City in 2004, of which 4,809 were single family detached houses, 2,464 were single family attached homes, 5,169 were apartements or condos, and 7 were mobile homes. Foster City is a rarity in the San Francisco Bay Area -- a true master-planned city. Located roughly mid-peninsula, the city is designed with a series of man-made lagoons and canals, sort of like a bay area version of Venice. If you like water, this may be an excellent place for you! With about 20 parks scattered throughout the city, water, water everywhere, and almost all construction being 35 years old or newer, Foster City is quite different than the rest of its neighboring peninsula cities. However, be advised: without a compass and a map or GPS navigational system, it is quite easy to get lost in Foster City, as the design of the city roughly resembles a laboratory rat maze! Unless you are a resident, you may find yourself totally unable to find your way out. Fortunately, though, at least the scenery is very pretty, even as you drive around it several dozen times while going in circles trying to find your way out...
