Danville is an upscale Contra Costa "bedroom community" city. The population of Danville is about 45,000 people. Danville is located in the center of the San Ramon Valley, built over flat land and gentle hills for the most part. Crime rates are low, school scores are high, and the home prices generally reflect these facts. Danville began as a farming and ranch town, and is one of the few cities in the county that has kept its historic buildings. They've even tried to preserve one of their trees - Danville's famous landmark, an ancient, giant Oak tree in the middle of Hartz Ave., appears to be just about ready to collapse -- so the city has encased it in a giant steel cage to keep it from falling, and to protect passersby from being crushed! Danville really did not have many homes before the 1960's, but soon took off with development. The 2004 California State Census counted 15,583 residential housing units in Danville, of which 11,987 were single family detached houses, 2,561 were single family attached homes, and 1,035 were apartments, condos, or townhouses. Unless you work nearby, the commute from Danville can be downright ugly, as traffic congests on I-680 during commute hours on a regular basis. Danville, along with San Ramon, Alamo, and Blackhawk, is located within the San Ramon Valley. (Nearby Dublin and Pleasanton are located in the neighboring Amador Valley). As valleys, these areas tend to get very hot during the summers. Eugene O'Neill wrote the plays "Long Day's Journey Into Night" and "The Iceman Cometh" while living in a west Danville house, which is now a national monument. Unlike many of the surrounding towns, Danville is actually an incorporated city. Danville maintains a certain old world charm, with many historic buildings restored, preserved, or both.
