Located just south of San Francisco, and stretching from the Pacific almost to the bay, Daly City offers some of the most affordable homes on the peninsula. The population of Daly City is about 105,000 people. Daly City borders just about every city around it -- San Francisco, Brisbane, Pacifica, South San Francisco, San Bruno, and Colma! Most of the homes in Daly City were built right after World War II, when millions of veterans were guaranteed home loans by the G.I. Bill. A few visionary builders, Henry Doelger, soon followed by the Gellert Brothers (Carl and Fred), realized that returning soldiers would need homes, and started slapping them together just in time for the housing boom. After all, Doelger had been making a fortune building basic homes in the Sunset and Parkside districts of San Francisco, as well, so he simply applied his basic (but effective) model to Daly City by purchasing 1350 acres on the west side of the city, just over the San Francisco border, and went on building homes for another 20 years or so until he ran out of land! The Gellerts bought 1000 acres of land south of Westlake and built that out. Other builders followed suit. Whereas the Sunset homes started at about $5,000, the later Daly City homes started at about $15000 -- still a deal, and still a great reason for someone to invent a time machine and go back with some cash... There is another side to the story, of course -- Daly City is often sharply criticized for its plain, boring looking homes (as is the Sunset and Parkside in San Francisco), which can turn off a lot of potential buyers -- Daly City is often jokingly referred to as the "White Cliffs of Doelger"! The John Cougar Mellencamp song with the refrain, "little pink houses (for you and me)", was supposedly inspired by Daly City, as well, as his plane was flying overhead... oh well -- fame is still fame... Daly City is served by several different elementary school districts and one high school district, Jefferson, which also covers other neighboring cities. The 2004 census counted 31,623 housing units in Daly City, with 16,104 single family detached houses, 4,469 single family attached homes, 10,425 multiple unit homes, and 625 mobile homes.
