Crockett is a small Contra Costa County city located in the northwestern part of the county, at the entrance to the Carquinez Strait. Crockett has a population of about 4,000 people. Also known as "Sugar City", after the C & H Sugar Refinery that dominates the town and the watefront, Crockett was at one time a "company town", with virtually all residents working for the refinery. Years ago, C & H trimmed back its operations, the freeways came, and many of the workers moved outside of Crockett. The views are great, as most of Crockett is located near the water or on gentle rolling hills that get steeper moving back from the downtown. Crockett is served by the John Swett Unified School District. An old, historic town, Crockett was the last town in California to still use operator-assisted telephone systems. Dial telephones didn't make it to Crockett until 1969. Two "famous" natives of Crockett: Alfred Zampa, for whom the new bridge is named, and who helped build the old Carquinez Bridge, and Aldo Ray, a movie star.
