Corte Madera is a Marin County bedroom town with a population of about 10,000 people. Corte Madera straddles Hwy 101, just above Mill Valley, and extends east to the bay (and Tiburon). With its two malls, Corte Madera has a good tax base to generate revenues for city services -- something that many Marin cities do NOT have. (The down side of wanting to halt all development and have peace and quiet). In fact, the largest shopping plaza in Marin is The Village at Corte Madera. Corte Madera translates from the Spanish to mean "cut wood". When the Presidio in San Francisco was built, much of the timber came from Corte Madera. Although there are some hills, giving some homes views, Corte Madera is fairly flat for the most part. Corte Madera shares police services with neighboring Larkspur, and the two of them call themselves the "Twin Cities", though that would be fraternal, not identical, twins... The California Highway Patrol also has a station in Corte Madera, which helps give Corte Madera more police presence, and therefore helps keep crime extraordinarily low. The 2004 California state census counted 3,974 residential housing units in Corte Madera. Of these, 2,618 were single family attached houses, 416 were single family attached homes, 930 were apartments, townhouses ,and condominiums, and 10 were mobile homes. Corte Madera and Larkspur also share their schools. Most teens attend Redwood High. Academic rankings are generally in the 90th percentile, statewide. On the south and east side, Corte Madera borders large parks and open space preserves, with trails. There are also trails around Corte Madera Creek. A short drive to the Larkspur ferry terminal will get you access to a commute ferry to San Francisco. You can reach the Corte Madera chamber of Commerce at 415-924-0441.
