Concord is the most populous city in Contra Costa, with a population of well over 125,000 residents. Like much of the bay area, Concord was at one time farmland. The housing boom came in the 1950's, and never looked back. Concord is a large city in area as well as population, and offers a good variety of housing in terms of size, style, age, type, and price. The 2004 California State Census counted 45,885 residentail housing units in Concord, of which 27,457 were single family detached homes, 2,851 were single family attached homes, 14,200 were apartments, condos, or townhouses, and 1,377 were mobile homes. Concord has many large employers, and it also has Diablo Valley College (where one can purchase grades for a fee, per a recent finding of a major "grades for cash" scandal discovered by the Contra Costa County district attorney's office) in neighboring Pleasant Hill. Concord also has Buchanan Airport. Sometime in the early 1990's, the city of Concord got the bright idea to allow an artist to "decorate" the median on Concord Avenue, in downtown, with his idea of modern "art". The result was dozens of ghastly giant metal spikes that resembled metallic mutant giant porcupine quills, ranging in height from 15 to 30 feet high, jutting out at all sorts of strange angles. Thankfully, many residents had a good critical eye for what is ART and what is ridiculous -- and they gave much heat to the city to remove the giant porcupine quills. (Heaven only knows how much those ridiculous things cost!) Fortuitously, supposedly the WIND weakened a few of the giant spikes in 1999, and the city POUNCED on an EXCELLENT opportunity to remove them, rather than have them fall and impale innocent passersby... Somehow, we think a local group of art afficionados had something to do with "weakening" them -- good job, people! (by the way, if anyone still has a photo of those HIDEOUS things, please email it to us! We'll put it on the site for a good laugh!)
