Colma is a north peninsula San Mateo County city, located just south of Daly City and north of South San Francisco. Colma -- this is the "City of The Dead". Colma is the smallest and least populated city in San Mateo County (by the living, that is -- it's by far the most populated if you count those who are "living underground", so to speak -- there are over 1.5 million such folks in Colma!). About 75% of the land in Colma is occupied by 17 cemeteries. Remember, every day above ground is a good day... and if you don't like flowers now, you will later -- they'll grow on you! You'll have plenty of time to rest after you die -- so for now, live a little! Ok, enough of the dead pan humor... Among the dearly departed whose spirits still roam the gently flowing hills of Colma: Wyatt Earp, William Randolph Hearst, Joe DiMaggio, one of Tina Turner's dogs (buried in one of Tina's fur coats), and a former Hells Angels leader, buried with his Harley Davidson... Long ago, Colma was known by the names of Sand Hill, Schoolhouse Station, and Lawndale. Colma has a golf course, Cypress Golf Course. A strong retail tax base is provided by the auto dealerships and several large stores (Home Depot, Best Buy, Marshall's, Nordstrom Rack, Kohls, Target, BevMo, and more). The last census counted about 375 residential units in Colma -- 211 single family detached houses, 66 single family attached homes, 92 apartments, and 6 mobile homes. Of course, the "single person detached" model, generally 6 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet, and 6 feet underground, is the preferred "housing unit" for the overwhelming majority of Colma residents. Welcome to the "city of the dead" -- Colma! It was developed in the early 1900's, when San Francisco passed a law barring burials within the city limits, as the land was deemed too valuable for such purposes.
